1925
R. Torre & Company, makers of Torani Italian syrups is founded in
San Francisco's North Beach by Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre. The
original five Torani flavors are created: Annisette, Grenadine,
Orgeat (almond) and Tamarindo. The syrups are mixed with soda
water and the Italian soda is born in America.
1956
Harry Lucheta assumes operation of R. Torre & Co. from his
mother-in-law, Ezilda Torre.
1979
Torani syrups are offered in 25 flavors and are found in Italian
restaurants, cafes and specialty stores throughout California.
1981
Coffee industry veteran, Brandy Brandenburg enjoys an Italian soda
made with Torani in Caffe Trieste in San Francisco. Intrigued by
the pure, authentic flavor, he brings a few bottles home to
Portland.
1982
Brandy invents the flavored latte with Torani syrup. He visits
with Harry Lucheta and tells him of his discovery. On a handshake
deal, Brandy is hired as a Torani sales associate and takes 10
cases of Torani back to Portland with him.
Brandy visits cafes and espresso carts throughout the Pacific
Northwest selling Torani syrups from the trunk of his car.
Nordstrom's espresso cart in Seattle puts a Torani flavored latte
on its menu.
1987
Torani now produces 30 syrups. Coffee-related flavors like Vanilla
and Hazelnut are top-sellers as the flavored latte is beginning to
appear on cafÈ menus across the country.
1991
Torani now produces 36 flavors. For the first time, Torani hires
outside management and the company grows to nine employees.
1993
Torani begins to sell its syrups internationally.
1994
Torani launches its gourmet line of sauces, chocolate is first
introduced (caramel and white chocolate will follow).
1995
Sugar Free line and the first co-branded syrup, Almond Roca(r) are
introduced. Consumers begin to see Torani on TV and movies, and
the company's web site is launched..
2000
Torani presents a line of shelf-stable whole-fruit smoothie bases
called Frusia for cafe use.
2001
Torani syrups are now available in 65 flavors
2002
Torani celebrates the 20th anniversary of the invention of the
flavored latte. Caffioco, a shelf-stable blended coffee base is
launched for cafÈ use. Torani Vanilla is the #1 syrup in the
nation, and Torani introduces its complete line of four vanilla
syrups to meet the growing demand.
2003
Torani now employees 80 individuals at its headquarters in South
San Francisco, not far from its North Beach origins. It offers 70
flavors and continues to introduce innovative taste profiles with
flavors like Cheesecake and Pumpkin Spice.
